A recent analysis of sexual offenses reveals that in the past three years younger women and children are falling victims to rape and sexual assault.

The most frightening aspect of the statistics from past three years is that offences were committed which involved girls and women with a disability.

Fiji Women’s Rights Movement Executive Director Nalini Singh says after analyzing data from 2016 to 2018 they discovered that there was a case in 2016 which involved a 10-year-old girl with a disability and in 2017 a case involved a woman with a disability.

“The age of the majority of the victims/ survivors is around 17-years-old and this is consistent when we compared the data from last three years. The age of the youngest victims has shifted as well. In 2016 it was 3-years-old and last year it was a 6-month-old baby.”

Singh says last year the oldest victim of rape was a 71-year-old woman.

She adds in the majority of the cases the victims knew their perpetrators.
