Second victim of Valelevu accident dies

The 35-year-old woman who was admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital has become the second fatality following a tragic motor vehicle accident on Sunday.

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro says the third victim is recovering at the Acute Surgical Ward.

Its alleged Viliame Ratoto lost control of the vehicle he was driving and mowed down the three pedestrians at Kanace road in Valelevu on Sunday.

The victims were rushed to the hospital where the first fatality, a 30-year-old woman was pronounced dead.

Ratoto was produced at the Nasinu Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He has been charged with one count of manslaughter, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and one count of breach of zero alcohol limit.

It’s expected the charges against Ratoto will be amended in light of the latest death. He has been remanded in custody.

The road death toll stands at 55 compared to 48 for the same period last year.
