Cane planting to begin next month

August 19, 2018 5:44 pm

Cane farmers around the country are being advised to begin preparing the land for cane planting season which starts next month.

The current prolonged dry spell is affecting farmers in Western and Northern Division has made it impossible to plant cane at the moment.

Fiji Sugar Corporation chief operating officer Navin Chandra says farmers can on the other hand prepare land now, wait for rain and start planting as soon as the wet weather begins.

“Planting at the moment is not happening but this is a very good time for land preparation. We’ve got FS tractors, there is a lot of tractors, so I would encourage people to start looking at land preparation whilst it’s dry.”

He says while FSC has supplied water tankers for irrigation, this is insufficient to enable farmers to begin planting now.
