Taxi drivers to apply for permits

January 5, 2018 7:14 pm

The Land Transport Authority has considered drivers who are employed by taxi owners to be given the first chance in applying for a permit.

LTA Board Chair, Vijay Maharaj says it’s about time these drivers start their own business

“The idea here is for those drivers that were employed by taxi owners for a number of years will be given the first opportunity to make this application. And if their income is below 20,000, obviously they will, and if they name will come out in the barrel, obviously they will be successful.”

Maharaj says one of the requirements is for applicants not to have held a taxi permit before.

All applications will be reviewed by an independent committee which will be appointed soon.

Applications will also be done under the new LTA amendment regulation.
