Koro Islanders hopeful about New Year

Despite being badly affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston earlier in the year and the recent depression, people on Koro Island are still in the spirits of welcoming the New Year.

Koro villager, Suliano Manakiwai, who says they look forward to starting a new life and leaving behind the devastation they went through.

“We look forward to having new developments on the Island like our houses being built and even the children are in the spirit of the festive season. The church bell rings and the hall is filled with people who want to move on. We are just grateful this season for the massive assistance we have received. The soil is healthier and full of nutrients now than before. Clothes and food rations keep coming in from the government and different organizations.”

Manakiwai says to date villagers on the island still encourage one another to move forward to have new beginnings come next year.

He adds people on Koro Island are very grateful for the continuous support and assistance they have been receiving since Winston struck in February.
