The first rugby league coaching clinic in the country for women was held yesterday in Suva.

The clinic recorded a good turnout from enthusiasts looking to try their luck in the 13-member code.

Steve Belsham, a National Rugby League development officer in Australia conducted the program and says he was impressed by what he saw in their first session.

“It’s an initiative to promote women in sport and to engage women in partaking in our game of rugby league through administration, coaching, first-aid and playing. The way things are going, I’m overwhelmed with the number of girls that have turned up and we will continue to hold the program weekly.”

The clinics will continue for the next three weeks with a view to establishing a competition for female rugby league players.
