The Health Ministry is advising Fijians to produce proper identification document or card when turning up at various immunization outreach posts.

Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says this is particularly for those Fijians that are in the 39 – 40 age group or above.

With 18 confirmed cases of measles, Dr Waqainabete says over 45,000 Fijians in the Central division have been vaccinated since the roll out of phase two of the immunization campaign.

“So with our vaccinations, what we’ve been doing is first and foremost vaccinating the high risk individuals and the next step now we are vaccinating the moderate to low risk individuals and really the low risk are those who we have alluded to the above 40 and so forth so the whole reason for the ID is just to seek clarification from those Fijians that come in the 39 to 40 age group or above.”

Dr Waqainabete says the immunization campaign that is currently underway in the Central Division is focused on children from six months to five years and those between 19 to 39 years of age.

“I would suggest drivers’ license or many be a combined FRCA or FNPF card or something similar like that. If it can show the date of birth so that’s important to understand.”

The latest confirmed cases are a three-month old from Wailali Settlement in Wainadoi and a 17-month-old child from Wailekutu in Lami.

Meanwhile, the Ministry is reminding the public that measles is contagious and non-essential travel to Serua/Namosi and Nasilai Village in Nakelo is discouraged.
