At least 10 people killed in Kenya bus accident

May 14, 2019 5:30 am

Ten people have died after a passenger bus crashed into a truck on the side of the road in southeast Kenya.

The accident took place in Tana River county on Sunday night, a senior police officer in the area told DPA news agency.

“The stationary truck, which was transporting construction material, had stalled on the roadside when the accident occurred,” said Tom Okoth.

Official statistics show that around 3,000 people die annually in road accidents in Kenya, but the World Health Organization estimates the figure could be as high as 13,000.

In October 2018, at least 50 people, including 12 women and seven children, were killed when a bus travelling from Nairobi to the lakeside town of Kisumu veered off the road.

According to survivors, the bus was overloaded and speeding. In December 2017, more than 35 people died in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in the East African country.
