More remand centers to be built in populated areas: AG

More remand centers will be constructed in major populated centers to address issues of growing prison population.

While delivering the keynote address during the inauguration of the Convention Against Torture Initiative High Level Seminar today, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told participants that they continue to fund the Fiji Corrections Service in these areas.

“Some of these are related to mental health issues among inmates and the health and welfare of corrections personnel. We are also committed to the ongoing improvement of corrections facilities, operations and services.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says they will continue to improve the conditions of Correction facilities and ensure that inmates are treated in a fair and humane manner.
