The judiciary believes the introduction of the Code of Conduct laws won’t present any major challenges to judicial services.

Chief Justice Anthony Gates appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Justice Law and Human Rights to make submissions on the Code of Conduct Bill.

Justice Gates says codes of this nature already exist in the judiciary, and are deeply ingrained into the nature of all judges and magistrates.

“There may be issues on propriety, somebody is misbehaving, publicly making a display that is thought to be quite inappropriate for a judicial officer. It might be alright for a member of the public to make a fool of themselves in public but it would not be appropriate for a judicial officer – the public’s confidence would be undermined.”

The Chief Justice also told the Parliamentary Committee that it’s accurate that the Code of Conduct Bill does not allow anonymous complaints.
