Nurses have been told to provide the best level of care to every patient regardless of their background.

Speaking at the College of Nursing Annual General Meeting in Suva this morning, Minister for Health and Medical Services Jone Usamate stressed that nurses must never let external forces influence their work.

Usamate says societal issues can affect a person’s professional capabilities.

“Treat everybody equally. You see who comes through the door – looks like you, speaks like you – does not speak like you, or different religion… you treat them equally. Not an easy thing to do because society teaches us, our communities teach us to look at people differently. In our villages, churches, our families we are told that person is not like you treat them differently.”

The minister also encouraged nurses to continue learning to improve medical services.

The College of Nurses is a professional body which focusses on professional development and building a more competent nursing cadre in Fiji.
