UNICEF recently released a report on children, food and nutrition which reveals that poor diet is affecting children’s health in the country.

Many Fijian children are eating inadequate amounts of healthy foods and consuming too many processed food.

UNICEF Pacific Representative, Sheldon Yett says children need a nutritious and safe diet with a range of nutrients to grow well.

“That means exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, it means the child’s mother, having access to diverse and nutritious food. It means that sugary, starchy foods are limited or not even been made available to kids.”

According to UNICEF, almost thirty-four percent of children in Fiji are overweight and eight percent are undernourished.
