October 24, 2018 6:55 pm

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Prince Harry and Meghan Markel will have their last public engagement in Nadi this morning.

They will unveil the statue of Sergeant Taliasi Labalaba – a British-Fijian Sergeant in the Special Air Service who was involved in the Battle of Mirbat on 19th July 1972.

The Fijian soldier’s exemplary courage places him high on the pantheon of SAS heroes.

Labalaba, aged 30, was shot dead whilst firing a 25-pounder gun at the attacking guerrilla forces.

He displayed notable bravery by continuing to fire the 25 pounder, single handed in spite of being seriously wounded when a bullet hit him on the jaw, after his Omani leader was seriously wounded in the battle.

The unveiling of Sergeant Labalaba’s tribute will be aired live on FBC TV from 11am.

The couple will be gracing the Kingdom of Tonga later today.
