The Ministry of Waterways is under-resourced to address flooding and drainage issues around the country.

Opposition MP Viliame Gavoka made the statement in response to the ministerial statement given by Minister for Waterways Dr.Mahendra Reddy on the Flooding, Catchment Management and Global Commitment.

Gavoka says despite efforts by the ministry, more work is needed.

“We get the impression that he is doing a lot of work but the support system is not there to support his ministry. I would like to see government extend the level of support that we need for the Honorable Minister to do what he needs to do. Again I say, it is one of the most important ministries in Fiji today.”

Gavoka says the Opposition supports the ministry with the need to have more catchments to ensure that water shortage is never a problem.

He adds dredging should continue in our major rivers to help address flooding issues.
