FASANOC to seek more funds for Rio

November 9, 2015 3:00 am

The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee is looking at other avenues to seek more funding for the Rio Olympic Games next year.

FASANOC President, Joe Rodan says despite the support from Government following the 2016 National Budget Address, it only covers three quarters of its projected budget for the meet in Brazil.

Government allocated $5.4 million for all overseas tours next year, including the Rio Olympics.

“The money that Government has given will probably go about ¾ of what we need. We will still look at our traditional sponsors to try and come up with the shortfall that we have. We are working on that and present a proposal to them to come on board for the Olympic Games next year.”

So far, only the Fiji 7s side and the national under-23 football side have booked a ticket to Rio with that figure to grow should the Telecom Fijiana side win the Oceania 7s Olympic Qualifying tournament in New Zealand this weekend.

The Oceania 7s tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday in Auckland and you can watch it live on FBC TV.
