Clean water for Coqeloa residents

September 18, 2017 6:06 pm

Close to two hundred people living in Coqeloa Central Settlement now have access to clean and safe drinking water.

Two 10,000 litre water storage tanks and 6km of piping system was installed by the Rotary Pacific Water For Life Foundation funded by the Japanese Government.

For decades, residents in the farming community have been using water from wells and the nearby river and creeks.

Water Project Manager, Mohammed Rafiq, says this project ends their struggles.

“They have given us two big water tanks. 10,000 litres each. So, it’s a great help because if we told the people of our community to buy these things and continue with the project, it would have been almost impossible to the people.”

District Officer Macuata Asesela Biutiviti says the onus is now on the people for the care and maintenance of the new water supply system.

“Take ownership of the project. The project is yours. It’s not for the government, it’s not for the government of Japan, not for the government of Fiji. It’s for the community.”

The project will supply water to 50 households, the Coqeloa Nursing Station, a mosque, a church and a mandir.

This is one of the four projects in Macuata that is funded by the Japanese Government under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project Programme and facilitated by the Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation.
