In efforts to strengthen food security in households, $10,000 worth of seeds were donated by the UN Women as part of a home garden initiative rolled out by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Permanent Secretary for Agriculture Dr. Andrew Tukana, says the contribution will help strengthen local food production and improve access to nutritious, safe and affordable food for families.

He says the initiative is about more than providing seeds, describing it as an investment in self-reliance and hope for vulnerable households.

“Home gardens play an important role in improving household nutrition, reducing food expenditure, and strengthening resilience against future shocks.”

UN Women Fiji Multi-Country Office Representative Alison Miriam Davidian says home gardening has long been a tradition that enables families to grow fresh food, save money and have greater control over their diets.

“These seed packs are more than agricultural inputs. They are an investment in healthier families, stronger communities, and greater self-reliance.”

The initiative is funded through the Markets for Change programme with support from the Australian Government, with aims to promote sustainable agriculture and build resilient communities.
