This year’s 64th Sanatan convention in Navua is placing strong emphasis on social awareness, with organizers using the gathering as a platform to address pressing national issues affecting communities across Fiji.
Hosted by the Shri Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, the convention has brought together representatives from various branches, along with their youth, sports, and women’s groups.
While the event features religious observances and sporting competitions, its central focus remains on promoting a healthier and more responsible society.
Sabha president Dhirendra Nand says the convention’s theme revolves around combating key social challenges, including drug use, violence against women and minors, and the rise of HIV and AIDS.
“These are real issues affecting our communities, and as an organization, we have a responsibility to speak out and educate our people”
The convention began with traditional rituals during the Brahman Sabha night and continues with an official opening ceremony led by the Indian High Commissioner.
A float procession through Navua showcased creative displays from participating branches, many of which highlighted anti-drug messaging and calls for an end to violence.
Cultural programs, including the upcoming Nari Sabha night, are also expected to reinforce these themes through performances centered on community well-being and social responsibility.
Nand says that while cases of drug involvement within Sanatan communities remain low, the organization is taking proactive steps to eliminate the issue entirely.
“We want to bring it down to zero and ensure our youths are guided in the right direction culturally, socially, and health-wise”
Sporting events, including football and netball competitions across various grades, are also being used to promote discipline, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles among young people.
Organizers say the convention reflects a broader commitment by the Sanatan community to not only preserve religious and cultural traditions but also actively contribute to addressing national concerns and shaping a better future for Fiji’s youth.
