Toutou proves age is no barrier

At 54 years old, Lavolevu Toutou has proven that it is never too late to pursue a new career.

After spending ten years studying law part-time while working as a civil servant, Toutou was among 30 legal practitioners admitted to the Bar today.

Toutou says his journey was a difficult one, having worked in the management field before he decided to change his profession.

“In 1990, I started off as a graduate trainee at the Public Service Commission where I had my first degree and then later in life I went on to pursue my master’s degree in management. And then later I decided that before the age of 55 I can change profession from management to law.”

He says he decided to change professions to meet the needs of his community.

“I decided that if I can change my profession to suit the needs of my community and my people that would be the way to go. My Vanua, they definitely need legal people to actually help in terms of trying to develop.”

He credited his family for being a constant support system through his journey.

“I dedicate it to all my siblings, to all my relatives, especially my wife and my son, I also dedicate this to my late brother, who had passed on to the Vanua of Nacolo north, I would also like to give the glory back to God for giving me strength and the breath of life.”

Toutou adds that age should not stop others from pursuing new opportunities.
