The National Fire Authority is warning businesses to improve fire safety measures after a fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damage at a property on Kaunitoni Street, Vatuwaqa.
The fire started at a lean-to structure attached to a two-storey concrete building.
The area was being used by Kris Lunch Box as a storage space for old cooking equipment and company files.
NFA received an emergency call through the 910 line at about 8:44pm last Thursday and immediately dispatched fire crews to the scene.
When firefighters arrived, the structure was already well involved in flames. Crews managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the adjoining building, avoiding further damage.
The affected structure suffered about 60 percent damage, with no injuries reported.
NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane states the incident highlights the need for businesses to take fire prevention seriously.
Sowane says that while no lives were lost, the fire shows how quickly flames can spread when combustible materials are stored in one area.
He says businesses must regularly check electrical systems, keep storage areas organised and ensure fire protection equipment is accessible.
Sowane adds that storing old equipment, paper records and other flammable materials can increase the impact of a fire and make firefighting efforts more difficult.
The cause of the Vatuwaqa fire remains unknown and is being investigated by NFA investigators.
The Authority continues to urge business owners to carry out fire risk assessments and maintain safe workplaces to reduce fire risks.
