Digicel will be delivering high-speed internet connectivity in the Pacific using a solution that is comparable to fibre services but without cables.

Regional Pacific Chief Executive, Shally Jannif says Digicel is using Free Space Optical Communication link for the first time.

She says Digicel will deliver high-speed internet to remote regions using equipment that is easy to transport and install, even to sites located around forests or near large bodies of water.

Jannif says the project aims to give rural areas the same quality of connection enjoyed by users in urban centres.

Digicel Regional Chief Technical Officer, Mudassar Latif says in Fiji, they have successfully trialled a line of sight technology to wirelessly transmit video, voice, and data at high speeds of up to 20 GigaBytes, covering a distance of up to 20 kilometres between each terminal.

He says that this solution will be an alternative for higher capacity backhaul demand that cannot be fulfilled via standard microwave links and where physical fibre deployment costs are too high.
