Senior officer’s bribery trial set for August

A senior police officer who’s charged with one count of bribery is expected to appear before the Suva Magistrates Court on the 19th of next month for his final hearing.

George Lagi, while employed as an officer with the Criminal Investigations Department accepted an advantage of $6580 from an individual between October 1, 2012 and January 31, 2014.

In a previous hearing, Lagi was given 14 days to confirm whether he would call witnesses or give evidence to his case under oath.

Appearing before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne today, the accused’s defense Counsel Joji Cakau informed the court that their alibi notice was ready and that the accused had made a decision to call in a witness for his trial.

Magistrate Somaratne questioned the state if there were objections to the notice, the state noted that there were no objections

However, the defense informed the court that the expected witness is currently overseas and would be available next month.

The court has ruled that the final hearing for the accused is scheduled for August 19 and bail has been extended for officer George Lagi.
