Over 200 complaints were received by the Consumer Watchdog pertaining to food and beverages this year.
Consumer Council of Fiji Chief Executive Seema Shandil says it is concerning to note that the majority of these businesses and supermarkets are repeat offenders.
She says food and beverage complaints ranked second on the list, but they need immediate action as they are related to the health of the consumers.
She adds that the council received numerous complaints about traders breaching price-controlled orders.
“Consumers also complained about the sale of expired food, which is not new; these are all recurring issues, and we can say that these are the reoffenders; these are the supermarkets or small shops who are re-offending, so they continue to sell expired products, thawed meat, frozen items, or items with foreign objects in them. Weevils are found in the food product, so these are ongoing issues that the Consumer Council of Fiji is trying to look into.”
Shandil says they are working with relevant stakeholders and also conducting inspections.
