Fresh from leading Suva Grammar School to its first Vodafone Deans Under-18 title in 21 years, captain Waisale Bolakoro has already set his sights on the next chapter of his rugby journey: representing Fiji and playing the game professionally.
Bolakoro played a key role in Grammar’s 36-21 victory over Lelean Memorial School in the final, helping end a two-decade wait for the coveted championship.
With the Deans title now secured, the skipper says his focus is firmly on earning higher honours.
“Probably to be in the Fiji Under-18 team and also to be a professional rugby player in the future.”
The talented youngster revealed that composure was the key message among the players before taking the field for the biggest match of their school rugby careers.
“All we did was encourage each other. For us to stay calm, for us not to care about the crowd and for us to stay composed so we can execute things properly.”
Despite the celebrations, Bolakoro was quick to acknowledge the efforts of Lelean, who pushed Grammar throughout the contest.
“I believe they deserved to be in the final too. They did good and scored some good tries. Our hats off to them too. We respect them too.”
The Grammar captain also paid tribute to the people who supported the team throughout the season, including parents, old scholars and supporters.
“We just want to thank the Lord for giving us the win and bringing us this far. We also thank our parents for all the sacrifices they made and the old scholars for always being on our side.”
Bolakoro also reserved special thanks for his three brothers, who he says have supported him throughout his rugby journey.
Now a Deans-winning captain, the young playmaker hopes the title is only the beginning as he pursues his dream of wearing the Fiji jersey and one day playing professional rugby.
