From the village of Salia in Tunuloa, Cakaudrove, on Vanua Levu, George Ting has overcome hardship to build a career in the information technology sector.

Describing himself as “a typical village boy”, Ting says his journey has been shaped by resilience, determination and a passion for technology.

Growing up in a broken family and undergoing several medical operations for a concave chest condition, he faced challenges from an early age.

Despite this, his fascination with technology never faded.

“I was always fascinated by how things worked. Landlines, wireless phones, computers and the internet—I wanted to understand how they connected people and shaped our future.”

With limited access to technology in his village, Ting spent years after high school teaching himself through research and online resources.

“I didn’t have much, but I used whatever resources I could find. I kept learning because I knew technology was the future.”

Unsure whether a traditional university degree was the right path, Ting eventually enrolled in the Diploma in Information Technology programme through Pacific TAFE at the University of the South Pacific.

He says the hands-on learning experience gave him the confidence and practical skills needed to pursue a career in the industry.

“The practical learning really helped me. It wasn’t just about theory, it was about doing the work and understanding how things operate in real life.”

Today, Ting works as an IT technician at Datec (Fiji) Pte Limited, where he is involved in data cable termination, server installation and fibre optic testing.

Although breaking into the IT industry was not easy, he remained committed to gaining experience and improving his skills.

“It hasn’t been an easy path into IT support, but I’ve learned that every bit of experience counts. I’m building myself step by step.”

Beyond his career, Ting is also the sole breadwinner for his family.

He supports his grandmother, wife, who is studying, two young children and his younger brother.

“It’s not easy. There are times when the pressure is a lot, but it gives me purpose. Everything I do now is for my family and our future.”

Ting believes technical education provides a strong pathway into the workforce, particularly in growing fields such as networking, cybersecurity and cloud computing.

“A diploma gives you real, hands-on skills that are needed today. It prepares you for real challenges and helps you get your foot in the door.”

He encourages young people to remain persistent despite setbacks.

“Keep going, even when things don’t work out the way you expect. Every step you take is part of your journey.”

From humble beginnings in rural Cakaudrove to a career in the IT industry, Ting’s story highlights the power of perseverance, continuous learning and determination.
