Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva is urging all road users to exercise greater care during the school holidays, as traffic volumes increase on major roads.
Tuinaceva says road safety is a shared responsibility, involving drivers, passengers, parents and children.
He says while road fatalities have declined compared with the same period last year, every life lost on Fiji’s roads remains one too many.
The Assistant Minister says road safety is not only a responsibility for drivers, reminding parents to educate their children on safe road use.
“Always remind children about safety rules as it is a concern now given the number of road accidents; we have now. Even though fatalities have dropped compared to the same period last year, but death is death.”
He is also urging PSV drivers to put passenger safety first and remain vigilant every time they are behind the wheel.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe says traffic officers will be out in force, particularly along busy roads, to monitor motorists and enforce road safety laws.
Drivers travelling long distances are also being urged to take regular breaks and rest whenever they feel fatigued.
The public is further reminded not to drive under the influence of alcohol or any substance that could impair their judgement.
