The government is actively contemplating a proposed bill aimed at safeguarding traditional knowledge.

Attorney General Siromi Turaga made this revelation during the ongoing Heads of Intellectual Property Office Conference for Pacific Island nations in Suva.

This initiative was already in the works under the previous administration.

“I’m proud going to cabinet and moving it forward as I said it will probably be difficult in November if we get the bill, but if we do it will be great otherwise we’ll have to do it by next year but there are other areas that needs to be covered.”

Turaga says the Attorney General’s chambers have been busy trying to activate this piece of legislation, and Fiji is setting the standard for the region.

“Best practices, yes, they’ll discuss what they have, what are the challenges and WIPO will provide some technical advise as how they can progress further and that is then left to entirely the island nations how they progress in terms of their legislative programs.”

The World Intellectual Property Organization has been instrumental in ensuring that the intellectual property of the Pacific people is upheld.
