China’s growing investment in green technology could provide new opportunities for Fiji as the country works to strengthen renewable energy and meet its climate goals.

The Global Development Initiative promotes sustainable and environmentally friendly development, including the sharing of technologies that support a transition towards low-carbon economies.

China says its cost-effective new-energy products are helping expand global access to green technology and contributing to low-carbon development.

For Fiji, this could be significant as the country continues efforts to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and increase the use of renewable energy.

As a small island developing state, Fiji is also among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

Greater access to affordable renewable energy technologies could help reduce emissions while supporting communities and businesses with more sustainable energy options.

China’s development cooperation also includes technology sharing and investment aimed at strengthening the capacity of developing countries.

The Global Development Initiative has involved more than 130 countries and international organisations, with China reporting more than 1,800 livelihood-focused projects and the mobilisation of more than $23b US dollars.

The initiative places emphasis on sustainable development, innovation and practical cooperation among countries of the Global South.

For Fiji, partnerships that provide access to green technology could support not only climate action but also economic development, energy security and resilience.

The challenge will be ensuring that technologies introduced through international cooperation are suitable for Fiji’s local conditions and deliver affordable, long-term benefits.

With global progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals falling behind schedule, China says greater cooperation and access to technology will be critical to accelerating sustainable development.

For Fiji, green technology could therefore be an important part of building a cleaner, more resilient and sustainable future.
