Village mayor in Samoa sacked for criticising land laws

A village mayor in Samoa has been sacked for openly criticising the government’s land laws.

Otemai Liu had joined a recent protest over land rights.

Soon after, he received a letter from the chief executive of the community development ministry, firing him with immediate effect.

In it, Otemai’s commitment to the government’s agenda was questioned, he was accused of negligence.

He told the Samoa Observer that he was considering pursuing legal action.
