More than a 100 people gathered at the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre in Suva last night to hold a vigil for New Zealand.
FWCC Coordinator Shamima Ali says the vigil was in response to the call to create a space to remember those slain in the terrorist attack in Christchurch.
“We have all been devastated by what has happened from yesterday and so, some of the young people asked whether we could have this here and we said yes, sure enough, everybody wanted to do something and find a space to talk about this. And I think everyone has felt it very profoundly because of the nearness and closeness of New Zealand to Fiji and because people have family there and so on and we’ve got a Muslim community here in this country so that’s why we’ve created this space here.”
