Key and Obama meet at the White House

Prime Minister John Key met with President Barack Obama at the White House on Saturday morning New Zealand time.

The two leaders met for almost an hour during which time they took a stroll around the grounds of the White House.

They discussed trade, climate change and regional and global security.

Addressing media in the Oval Office after the meeting, Mr Obama said that under his and Mr Key’s tenures in office the relationship between New Zealand and the United States had developed to the strongest it had ever been.

Mr Obama said New Zealand and the US share the same values, excellent commercial ties and increasingly strong military relationships.

The president also said he wants to visit New Zealand before the end of his presidency and that his office is working to schedule a trip to New Zealand.
