World Rugby has responded to the statement released by Fiji Rugby Union yesterday outlining Fiji’s desire to be included in the World Rugby Council.

The statement questions why Fiji does not have a seat in the council compared to lower ranked nations such as Canada.

World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper says that a certain criteria needs to be met by Fiji’s governing body in order to have a seat in the world council.

““We are looking at finding the right criteria that motivates Unions on performance on a wide variety of criteria that will allow hopefully the opening up of participation for those teams coming on the council so we are not at the end of that process yet. That may provide in the future unions like Fiji and others with a possibility that if they comply with certain areas that are outlined that they can hope to be one day on the council.”

FRU CEO, Radrodro Tabualevu says plans are in place to meet the criteria set by World Rugby.
