May 15, 2019 4:22 pm

Weightlifting Fiji is confident that the eight lifters chosen to represent the country in the Junior World Weightlifting Championship this year will do Fiji proud.

With the exception of the Timothy Vakuruivalu, this will be the first international tournament for the other seven lifters.

Fiji’s Weightlifting Coach Henry Elder urges Fijians to rally behind these lifters as they are the future of weightlifting in the country.

Elder says they are aware of the task ahead and they are preparing these athletes accordingly for the competition.

“In December, we’ve had trials with the Pacific Games trials also worked as a trial for the World Junior Championship also. Up until recently, we’ve had double sessions and triple sessions. Athletes are working hard. We’ve obviously got an immense task ahead of us as this Championship is next to the World Championship in weightlifting.”

A total of 64 countries will be participating in the two-week event with approximately 500 athletes to compete in the Championship.

The Championships will be held between the 1st to the 8th of next month.
