Vaivai wins gold at Commonwealth Weightlifting Champs

Fiji weightlifting rep, Apolonia Vaivai won a gold medal in the women’s 69kg category yesterday in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Pune, India.

The 24 year old lifted 88kg in the Snatch and 104kg in the Clean and Jerk for a total of 192kgs.

Vaivai is competing in a lesser weight category having shed 6kg since her last international outing at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in July.

The Levuka lass won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland last year.

Meanwhile, Vaivai’s male counterpart, Manueli Tulo finished in 5th place in the men’s 56kg weight division.

Tulo lifted 103kg in the Snatch event and 133kg in the Clean and Jerk for a total lift of 236kg.

The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship is a qualifying tournament for the World Championship in the USA next month as well as the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
