Upsets at Oceania Championships

Fiji chess representatives, Gloria Sukhu and Suganda Goswami caused major upsets at the Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Australia yesterday.

Women’s Candidate Master, Sukhu managed an unexpected win over higher ranked Master player, Vivian Smith of New Zealand, while Goswami, who was featuring in her first international tournament defeated Australia’s in-form International Master player, Katherine Jarek.

National Champion Candidate Master Calvin Prasad and Sanmogam Goundar finished as the highest ranked players from all Pacific Islands including Fiji, Guam, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.

The six-member contingent returns to the country today to prepare and will be in action next Sunday in the Courts Fiji Open Chess Championship at TappooCity in Suva.
