A new selection formula has been implemented for teams that will be part of the World Rugby Pacific Challenge Cup this year.

For the first time, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and Japan will need to field an Under-23 team with only five senior players.

Fiji Airways Flying Fijians Coach John McKee says they are already working along the new criteria.

“We will start looking at a wider squad to train for that tournament. I mean thats what we going to do is to integrate all our programs around our academy. We will have a young squad. A squad of 28, which means 23 players will need to be the age of 23 or under and you can have five more experience players in the squad over the age of 23 years.”

The four nations’ part of the Pacific Challenge Cup used to field a feeder team to its national side in the competition.

The tournament will be held in March in Suva.
