Team effort for Rio spot

May 13, 2016 4:00 am

It will take more than just winning a medal at the Oceania Weightlifting Championships in Suva next month to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games.

National weightlifting coach, Joe Vueti says it will come down to the overall medal tally, meaning the entire 15-member squad will need to pull their weight.

“The top four place-getters in the women’s total points will get a place each for the Olympics and the men’s, it will be the top five.”

Only one spot is available in the men’s and women’s divisions for the top four and five countries on their respective medal tallies.

150 lifters from 24 countries will compete in the Oceania Championship at the Vodafone Arena on May 24th-28th.

Vueti will trim the extended 24-member squad to 15 lifters next Friday.
