The Fiji Swimming team is now bound for Turkey to compete in the FINA World Swimming Championship this week.

Head coach, Sharon Smith is accompanied by swimmers, Caroline Puamau, paul Elaisa and Tieri Erasito and she says clear goals are set to put Fiji back on the map in the world of swimming.

“Actually five years ago Caroline was up there ie, in the top 50 and that’s pretty good so we’re trying to get all these swimmers rankings up, it’s to do with the FINA points. We’ll also try to break national records of course, a lot of people say oh yeah, just go over and break records but it’s not as easy as people think it is, so breaking national records is important and improving personal bests is what our aims are for this trip.”

While points gained from the World Championships is too far away to be counted towards the next Olympic Games in Brazil, Smith says they can look forward to next year’s Long Course World Championships in Barcelona.

Elaisa races first in the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly event.

Erasito will feature on Day One in the 200m butterfly while Puamau will race in the 100m backstroke.
