Sports organizations urged to postpone events due to measles outbreak

The Ministry of Sports, Fiji Sports Commission with FASANOC are advising all Sporting Federations, to postpone all sporting events happening this month and early January.

The Ministry of Sports, Fiji Sports Commission with FASANOC are advising on this is in light of the measles outbreak in the country.

Fiji National Sports Commission Chairman Peter Mazey says all athletes making overseas trips must get vaccinated 14 days prior to their departure.

“All athletes that are leaving the country, we have a number going for scholarships or for a qualifying event for the Olympics, they must be vaccinated. Some countries are already asking for sportspeople to be vaccinated 14 days beforehand.”

Mazey adds they are adhering to the advice given by the Ministry of Health and requests collaborative actions to control the spread of measles.

An emergency meeting for all sporting bodies will be held this Friday at the FMF Gymnasium to further discuss the matter.
