October 13, 2015 6:52 pm

Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama says the involvement of Vijay Singh in golf has brought about a lot of recognition for the county in the sport.

He says the outing of the ‘Big Fijian’ is overwhelming.

“A big bula and vinaka to our very own Vijay Singh. Who also returned to 2015 as our marked player. Vijay has come a long way since he was a ball retriever and caddy in Tavakubu in our second city Lautoka. And he has done himself proud and nation proud by making into the top ranks of international golf.”

Bainimarama also applauded the seven Fijian nationals participating amongst the competitors from 27 counties at the Fiji International, which begins this Thursday at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course.

Meanwhile, the strong wind conditions at Natadola Bay will test the mettle of the 132 professional golfers who will compete in the Fiji International from tomorrow.

Former World number 1, Vijay Singh says the wind conditions are a lot stronger compared to last year.

“It’s already a hard job trying to hit the balls from the tee to the green. And then get on the green is even harder to turn around. So if the greens are slow, I think it will be a lot more enjoyable to play on this course.”

The Fiji International will begin tomorrow at Natadola Bay with the winner to collect $1.67 million.
