Shackley loses first up in Samoa

Team Fiji squash rep, John Shackley was the first local athlete to take part in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, Samoa today.

Despite a valiant performance against his more experienced counterpart from Scotland, Richard Hollins, Shackley lost the match 3-0.

The youngster will now progress to the consolation plate tomorrow.

Tennis rep, Devrath Narayan also played in the boys singles and lost to PNG’s Mathew Stubbins in two straight sets.

Weightlifter, Ulina Sagone will be competing in the 53kg weight category in the next hour.

Athletics sprinters Alesi Finau and Laisani Kavuru lost out in a place in the Girls 100m finals succumbing in the semi-finals.

Alesi Finau came in 9th with a time of 12.45seconds, while Laisani Kavuru was placed 14th with a time of 12.82sec.

Meanwhile, Kameli Ravuci (49.46s) and Apolosi Koroi (49.83s) are through to the next round of eliminations in the 400 metre event that will take place tomorrow.

All six swimmers competed in the pool today with the finals to be held this evening.

A total of 22 gold medals are on offer on the first day of competition today.
