Bainimarama thanked the players for winning five tournament titles, a back to back 7s leg which was topped off with the side being crowned the World 7s Series champions.

“You have bounced back from the disappointment of last year’s series and made your triumphant return as the kings of sevens rugby. As both Prime Minister and a diehard fan, I can say it’s been an absolute thriller to be part of the journey.”

Bainimarama says the 7s players have one of the toughest jobs, as they have to satisfy the most passionate rugby fans on the planet.

He also acknowledged the efforts of Gareth Baber.

“I’d like to acknowledge the leadership of Gareth Baber in leading the team to this title. Inheriting the reigns of a dynasty of the Fiji 7s rugby team us a serious responsibility. You’ve brought out the best from these stellar young athletes, you’ve earned the trust and respect of our people and you have our gratitude.”
