December 15, 2019 7:12 am

The Fiji Men’s 7s side is safely through to the Cape Town 7s quarterfinal after their 54-7 win over Japan in their last pool match.

The national side will face Ireland in the quarterfinal at 11:02 tonight.

Fiji had to wait for the USA and South Africa match result to confirm whether they would feature in the quarterfinal after failing to do so in Dubai last week.

But South Africa defeated USA 21-15 to finish top of the pool and Fiji as runners up.

Jerry Tuwai registered Fiji’s first try against Japan inside the first two minutes after he worked his way through the defense.

Fiji then had to work a bit hard for their second try to Waisea Nacuqu after the ball was turned over by Napolioni Bolaca.

Bolaca then in later put Alasio Naduva through for their third try.

Nacuqu ran through for his double after Meli Derenalagi tapped the ball back straight from the kick off.

Captain Paula Dranisinukula was at the end of another Tuwai brilliance with the team’s fifth try as Fiji led 35 nil at half time.

Fiji knew they needed more points as they started the second half with more urgency as Josua Vakurunabili went through for the team’s sixth try before Waisea Nacuqu struck seconds later.

Aminiasi Tuimaba then got on the score sheet after coming off the bench to help Fiji hit the fifties.

Isoa Tabu copped a yellow card which resulted in a Japanese try just seconds from full time.

Meanwhile, looking at the other quarterfinals, South Africa will face Kenya at 10:18pm.

France takes on Argentina at 10:40pm and New Zealand play Scotland at 11:24pm.

The Cup semifinal kicks off at 1:39am tomorrow and the Cup final at 5:56am.
