World Rugby 7s Rookie of the year Ratu Meli Derenalagi has been promoted to the rank of Able Seaman

World Rugby 7s Rookie of the year Ratu Meli Derenalagi has been promoted to the rank of Able Seaman with the Republic of Fiji Navy this morning.

He was hosted by fellow Naval officers at the Navy base in Walu Bay.

Derenalagi left Fiji two weeks ago as an Ordinary Seaman but was inducted to his new rank by Commander of the Republic Fiji Navy Humphrey Tawaken this morning.

The Commander Navy congratulated Derenalagi for his achievements with the National 7s Team after their recent win in Paris and claiming the series title.

Commander Tawake says Derenalagi is continuing the legacy of the Fiji Navy.

“I know you are living up to the legacy and the reputation that you have to be proud of and we are all proud of your achievements, not many people know that you are a sailor, but those humble beginnings and the teachings that you’ve nurtured within you from this institution has allowed and helped you in flying the Fiji flag overseas.”

Meanwhile, Fiji 7s Team Manager Jone Niurua was also promoted, he is now a Chief Petty Officer.
