Fiji Airways Men’s 7s Coach Gareth Baber says he was impressed with a few talents he discovered during the Marist 7s tournament over the weekend.

Baber says he is constantly on the lookout for players who can make a difference in the national squad.

However, Baber adds the main challenge of recruiting players is maintaining a certain fitness level and coping with a lot of pressure.

“The biggest challenge that I have is ensuring that the players are with us, the fitness standard that we require and the system that we operate both in attack and defense they’re comfortable with that. Then if I’m looking at players here – it’ll be the ones that I think will be able to pick that up very quickly if they were to be included. Because ultimately they’re going to be put under a huge amount of pressure.”

Meanwhile, Mesulame Kunavula has joined the Fiji 7s team in training and will be up for selection for the Hong Kong tournament.

Baber is expected to name his 13 member squad for Hong Kong this week before they depart on Thursday.

Fiji is pooled with Australia, New Zealand, and Kenya.

Fiji meets Kenya at 11.37pm next Friday in its opening pool match, they will then play Australia at 5.13pm Saturday before taking on New Zealand at 8.55pm Saturday.
