$2M bill for Fiji 7s

The Fiji Rugby Union has revealed it spends around a massive $2 million on the Fiji Airways men’s sevens team each season.

While this is miniature compared to what some other top rugby nations fork out, FRU Chief Executive John O’Connor says it’s not an easy task to deliver a world-class team.

“We usually take it as a challenge but to operate the Fiji 7s team it’s a huge cost and it’s an ongoing sort of machine that is running and incurring a lot of costs.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji 7s side hopes to defend its Hamilton title in New Zealand and climb further on the World Rugby series standings.
