The Vodafone Vanua Cup Challenge is getting more attention this year compared to previous years.

The Fiji Rugby Union has extended the competition, not only focusing on the main challenge but has also introduced women’s competition and the under-19 competition.

FRU Development Manager Sale Sorovaki says this shows the growth in women’s rugby.

“We’re slowing introducing rugby into the 16 teams and we’ll start off with 10’s like Skipper last year. Good sign in the development of any sport I guess is through our women movement.”

Meanwhile, 16 teams in two pools in the main competition will fight for the top honour.

Vodafone Fiji contributed over $300,000 towards the operations of the Championship and will go directly in the match vouchers, playing kit provisions, ball supply and a grant of $20,000 for the senior division and $5,000 for the Under-19 category.

The top two teams from the two conferences in the Central /Northern divisions and the Western division will contest the semi-finals.

The Championship will kick off on Saturday with the finals scheduled for the 21st of June.
