Maori All Blacks bounce back to beat Flying Fijians

July 20, 2019 9:42 pm

Fiji probably suffered a little with all the changes, as a perhaps less experienced team fought it out today as they lost 17-26 to Maori All Blacks in Rotorua..

The combinations weren’t as slick as they might have been had the same side played again, but it’s a great opportunity for so much of the squad to get quality action in this World Cup year.

Nakosi on the left wing was a threat every time he touched the ball, while the midfield of Vatubua and Nayacalevu impressed.

Veremalua at hooker showed his worth to lead the pack from the front, while skipper Waqaniburotu and debutant Voka were strong in the loose forwards. A big effort once again from Fiji, but they came up just on the wrong side of the scoreboard this week.

There were plenty of standouts from the Maori, with Stevenson at fullback one of the best. Skipper Ash Dixon battled hard, while Parkinson impressed before departing with a potentially serious ankle injury.

Hall and Black as the halves pairing were sound, with the latter’s kicking a brilliant display of control and pinpoint accuracy.

Nankivell and Thompson in midfield too were electric at times, while the likes of Harris and Walker-Leawere off the bench injected themselves well.

The series is shared between the Maori All Blacks and Fiji!

It’s a much improved Maori side, and a far better match overall than what we had in Fiji last week.

The sides really turned up with their A-games, with Fiji’s much-changed side putting in a brilliant performance with all the changes that were made.

The continuity of selection certainly paid off for the Maori, with a vastly improved game from today’s hosts.

It’s a shame there isn’t a game three in this series, because it would be an absolute cracker.

Full-Time: 26-17.
