All Black Beauden Barrett has been named Sportsperson of the Year at the 2019 Taranaki Sports Awards.

It’s the third time Barrett, who hails from coastal Taranaki, has scooped up the award.

The awards were held at the Devon Hotel in New Plymouth on Friday night to recognize outstanding achievements by Taranaki athletes, coaches and officials over the last year.

Sport Taranaki chief executive Michael Carr said Barrett faced some tough competition in his award category in Black Cap William Young, Olympics-bound runner Matthew Baxter and young tennis star Ajeet Rai.

“The awards evening is the perfect opportunity to honour our region’s top athletes alongside the many community volunteers who help make Taranaki local sports so strong.”

The judges were unanimous in their decision with Barrett’s outstanding achievements over the last 12 months.

Other winners included Senior Sportswoman of the Year, Zoe Hobbs, Junior Sportsman of the Year, Fletcher Moles, and Junior Sports Team of the Year, ski duo Claudia Kelly and Hannah Baker.

Four people were recognised for their service to sport having dedicated more than 25 years to the community – Beth Webster for tennis, Madge Cathro for netball, Roger Tonkin for speedway and Vaughan Grant for surf life saving.
