Paralympic Games gets Digicel boost

November 28, 2012 11:40 pm

Next week’s Fiji Paralympic games will be the biggest ever in Suva.

Organisers were today presented with $20,000 from Digicel and for the first time this year, the 400 athletes from around Fiji will be registered as plans to start up a database for potential national reps.

Digicel chief executive, Maurice McCarthy says despite the games being a one-day event, their hefty sponsorship will be money well spent.

“It’s great getting the support from the media because it just increased the awareness in terms of what the committee is doing ideally calling on more of the private sector to get involved to help people with disabilities to given them the opportunities and work with the committee in terms of where that money is going. I call on more bodies, more organisations to open your cheque books and get involved.”

Only five games will be played this year and also for the first time athletes will complete in only team sports – athletics will not be part of the games on Monday.
